I loved the manga style in Quartett. It's a nice change of pace from usual VNs, and it was executed very well.

How the hell is Tsukihime good for newbies (seriously, I initially dropped it when I got into VNs for the first time), and how are any of those must-sees other than Sharin not good for complete newbies? Fate/stay night, Saya and Umineko are famous for being many people's first VNs, and Clannad is pretty much the perfect example of a romance VN to start out with.

Clannad is probably your best bet. (Do note that it's very drama-heavy in the routes.) If you don't mind depressing stories, Narcissu is also a good one. If ero is no problem, you can also try for Quartett! or Kira Kira.

Really? I love Quartett and if I recall correctly there isn't anything that will really make you mad, if there's anything at all.

It's a computer program telling the user a written story. All other elements can vary; there are VNs with choices (Clannad), but there are also completely linear VNs (Higurashi). There are VNs with full animation (School Days), VNs with significant amount of artwork (Mahoyo), VNs with only basic sprites and backgrounds (Umineko), and even VNs with only backgrounds (Jouka no Monshou). There are VNs with a large amount of background music, full voicing and sound effects (G-Senjou no Maou), there are VNs with only some music playing (True Remembrance), and there are entirely silent VNs (don't know any translated examples, VNDB has some Japanese ones at http://vndb.org/g1105?fil=olang-ja).). There are VNs where the text is written over the entire screen (Tsukihime) and VNs where the text is confined to a small window at the bottom (Kanon). There are VNs with a presentation style that imitates movies (Narcissu) and with a presentation style that imitates comics (Quartett!).

All kinds of many different stories that are all visual novels. The only thing they all have in common is that they're computer programs and that they tell a written story.

Aoishiro never manages to keep my attention. I play it for a while, then I never feel the incentive to pick it up again. Then I try again, but I never keep playing. It has too much slice-of-life, and that slice-of-life isn't interesting enough to be interesting on its own.

Not truly a VN, but still listed on VNDB at a mere 6.53 is Crimsoness. For a short game you can fully complete without a guide in less than 30 minutes it's fucking awesome. I personally rated it 9/10. Definitely worth playing, only takes a bit of your time: http://www.insani.org/releases/CrimsonessSetup%5Binsani%5D%5BAT2008%5D.exe

Quartett! (VNDB rating 7.67) is a difficult one to rate. I personally rated it 8.4, but I would recommend it more strongly than the rating suggests. It does revolutionary things with the visual novel medium, to the point it seems more like a 'visual comic' than a visual novel. Presentation-wise, I'd give it a 10/10. My only problem with it is that the story never really does anything truly interesting. Still, the presentation is amazing and the slice-of-life is very interesting, so I highly recommend it. And rating it only 7.67 is bullshit, it deserves an 8 at the very least.
