I agree with most of what you're saying about Kanon not being around much, but didn't he exist way before the school festival? Pretty sure Kanon initially existed as a way for Yasu to try out what it would have been like if they lived as a boy instead, and then later on Jessica expressed interest in him and everything went downhill from there on. Yasu could've stopped it and probably wanted to but they were too desperate for love to refuse, and in turn eventually fell in love with Jessica (on top of Battler and George.)
