I'll tell you what happened in Umineko.
At the start of the conference, Kinzo introduced Lion to all of the family, and explained that she was the rightful heir of the Ushiromiya family and Beatrice's gold.
"Ushiromiya Kinzo" is already dead at the start of all games, and indeed, "Kinzo" died after meeting the kuwadorian Beatrice's child. From that point onward he was reborn as Goldsmith, dedicated to make the mistakes of his past life right.
There was objection from the parents, but Lion wasn't interested in the gold or the position of heir, and distributed it all to Kinzo's family.
Touched by her magnanimity and the bright future ahead, Krauss and the others begged Lion to at least keep a part of the money, and she agreed to a sum that would let her live out the rest of her life in peace with her beloved.
The cousins learned the truth, and fought it out. It was a hard fight, but they all did their best and finished it without regrets.
After that there was a big party, and everyone planned the happy future to come ahead.
Unfortunately, the typhoon hit the bombs hidden in the island hard, and the old shells weren't enough to protect them from such a storm, making them explode.
The games are happening in literal purgatory, as they are a way to make Battler atone for his sin against Yasu. This is why there are so many demons in the cast, and why there are so many references to Dante's inferno (Virgilia, Clair, Beatrice.)
After undertanding and atoning, and with the final test of jumping after Yasu in the ocean, Battler's soul was laid to rest (but his body continued living), and was able to go to heaven with the rest of his family.
Batler and the whole family watch ange from heaven, and Maria even comes down to give her advice often, as they love her very much.
