My favorite narrative hook in doujins is forgotten divinity.
The idea that there are beings out there who had their time in the sun, who were formed from the very essence of adoration, and who are now desolate.
No one remembers them, their objects of worship have fallen to disrepair, they may even be invisible to all but the most fortunate or attuned.
By dint of immortal nature they have known loneliness greater than any human. Left to dwell on their gnawing misery, grasp the straws of daydream as they remember when they were wanted. To feverishly hope that some catastrophe obliterates their existence before they're left lost forever.

...and then that solitude is broken. One connecting strand to the mass of faith and love threads itself to them, and they find a friend. A lover. A focus. A rock in the endless tide to whom they tenaciously cling.

And NEVER let go. NEVER EVER AGAIN. Not again into the dark. The cold. Not by themselves. Won't let go, can't let go. NEVEREVERNONONONO. NOT LETTING GO!
