I accept the manga as Ryukishi's official answer to the VN, but I like how the VN itself allows you fill in the details however you want. I consider the manga a retelling of the story with more defined answers, rather than the exact same story. It's still practically identical, but there are some differences, like the Erika vs Battler fight in EP8.

I always thought that the very first phone call (before the start of the game) was from Yasu and all the others were from Battler. I really dislike how Daisuke Ono plays the man every single time in the PS3 version, even thought it completely contradicts Natsuhi's description of the man's voice during the first phone call. How can you describe that as "a boy whose voice hasn't broken yet"? How can it be "too early to be sure that this person is a man"?

To me, this is more proof that Umineko was never meant to have voice acting in the first place. There is no way to do it without either fucking something up, forcing a certain interpretation where the original text was ambiguous or spoiling who the person talking actually is.

Also, while the voice acting is pretty great in general, I find Berune and Kanon's voices incredibly grating in certain scenes. I'd rather imagine the voices myself. That way, I can read at my leisure and the action scenes don't lose their impact. Voices make the fights feel too slow, break the immersion when you accidentally skip them mid-sentence and force the music to loop three times instead of just one. Awkward. Ryukishi didn't choose the length of the tracks or the length of the scenes with voice acting in mind.

I'd argue that Saikoroshi-hen is part of the main story. I consider it mandatory and it's a shame that so many people on Youtube ignore it because they can't patch it to look like generic anime garbage.

It's a good chapter with very interesting themes, but the beginning can be really off putting because Rika apparently dies and loses the peaceful world she worked so hard to earn. It's way too cruel and can make you feel like Ryukishi ruined the happy ending just to artificially extend the story. And "Mion" turns out to be an asshole in this world, which makes the reader feel like the real Mion is not an inherently good person and is only like that because of her upbringing. Most players never realize that the Mion in this world is actually Shion because they never got permanently switched as kids.

If you can put up with that and trust the author not to make stupid decisions, everything is cleared up at the end and you end up loving the chapter. For me, it's the real ending of Higurashi. A must read.
