Well, yeah, those Mei cards are not Watanabe's art. It's specifically his JK Rika design that's ugly.

It would have been more fitting if Rika's design had been exceptionally beautiful and Satoko had had more of homely plain girl charm. But somehow he turned Rika's face into that of an ugly mongoloid while Satoko is cute, handsome, beautiful, sexy--all at the same fucking time.
This just doesn't align with how I imagine them based on all the textual descriptions and original art.
