Well, that comes from the fact that his character is a boring, introverted pushover until he becomes crazy, and then he is a withdrawn pushover that is completely crazy as he snaps.

Half of the issues of Tsukihime could be resolved if he talked to people. Unfortunately he is too afraid to talk to people, unless he goes completely berserk on them.

Seriously, replace Shiki by Shinji and see what change in the narration. Absolutely nothing. The "it's all a dream I couldn't have done that" monologue after killing Arc? 100% Shinji. His first reactions to a strange happenstance is to deny it could have happened, try to delude himself into denying it, to hide it, to do his best to not become involved, and to deflect. Unless he goes berserk and then he is curazy.

When Arc asks for his help he denies, deludes himself, hides, and only when he has exhausted all his possibilities does he think straight. The end of the Chaos arc is slightly better when he decides to stand his ground, but then there are all the weirdness of Roa and he denies, hides, and deludes himself even more.

The manga has a far better adaptation of his personality, but in the VN he is a Shinji Ikari through and through.
