I agree. Tomitake is genuinely humble, while George tries way too hard to be a "nice guy" even though he's still a jealous piece of shit. I still think George is very similar to Tomitake, though.

Tomitake is boring. His muscles came from the fact that he was in the army in the most isolated position, sniping, and when he had an eye accident, he became completely worthless. His only hobby is to take pictures of birds and he is barely interesting in his job with Tokyo. He is only a liason with a fruitless research station that ends up being shut down.
He tricks a woman who only worked her whole life and falls in love with his hobby of photography because she has nothing else going for her in her life.

I still find it extremely weird that Ryukishi finds Tomitake to be his favorite character. Or maybe he's proud that he created such a boring character without just making him bland.

Not really. I only did this with George because it was clear that whenever his glasses fog up, he's showing his true self.

He gets an entire part in ep 6 about how much he's a complete shit.
Battler is nihilistic but tries desperately to hide it and acted foolish in the one manner that didn't actually matter in an ironic way.
Rudolf is a womanizer without being much of a success business wise but he was alright all around, except for that children swap fiasco.
Hideyoshi was an alright father and businessman but was too lenient and that fucked him up. He was rather pure and decent.
Genji is a robot.
Kinzo is the idealized perfect patriarch self made man that was ruined by losing love, showing that you can have everything in the world and be miserable. Though we can never know who he truly was according to ep 8.
Krauss was too indecisive business wise and that doesn't really belittles him as a man.
Godha is overall a decent guy except when he puts down his coworkers out of spite by giving Shannon and Kanon extra work.
And Nanjo was a successful doctor.

Every character is obviously flawed but I would argue that the female characters are more broken and flawed.
And I think it's actually done intentionally, both for lewd otaku sexual attachment and to make the women more interesting than the man.

This is just me but I find Ryukishi's men to be rather boring overall, at least compared to his female casts overall. Other than Kinzo and Battler, all of the female cast are much much more interesting and better.
