The existence of gods and youkai are because of orky mentality from humanity. Gensokyo was created because Humanity now does NOT believe those gods and monsters exist. So Gensokyo is nothing more than a human zoo where the remaining false gods and spirits of noxious immaterial feed upon the few humans who still fear and pray to them. Nothing more.

This is why they are isolated. This is why any human becoming a youkai is destroyed. Because they are starved for belief as it is. The moment a plague hits the village, Gensokyo will go out in a puff of logic.
