They're only as generic as you believe them to be. Take a look at what we've done with Anubutts. They went from basic Egyptian-theme Jackal to the little OCD love machines thanks to a steady stream of stories and greentexts.
I do prefer tauric Sphinxes lionpussy woo woo, and I'd try writing one if I actually knew any riddles or how to write dialogue that actually requires thought and cleverness. They're also guardians in Egyptian mythos, so that could be implemented as well. Riddle-spouting warriors. There's certainly some potential there.
