You can tell based on the cream spot on the bottom too, for watermelons. My family used to grow a large garden because we were always poor, and watermelons were always what I looked forward to the most! that and collard greens! I've never had a melon from a store that was as tasty as homegrown though.

It's always fun to take a watermelon with you down to the lake or stream, tether it so it's in the cool water and swim as much as you can, then plop down on shore and break it open and have a refreshing cold snack in the sunshine.
