Touhou's only popular because of the memes and fan-stuff more than ZUN's works. ZUN was lucky to being born with a talent for music, which is slowly losing by the way, most of his songs are good enough to get ytpmvs and arranges, just see "U.N. Owen Was Her" and "Nights of Nights". Even Undertalefags are using Touhou arranges for their fanmade shit.
The fact that ZUN is very "kind" with the copyright helped Touhou to grow. People took advantage of this to sell albums, merchandise, fan-games, doujinshis and shit. Maybe not everyone buy the fucking fan-games but they're still popular and get some audience since they're related to a series with loyal fans, those fan-games would never have the same attention if they use original characters because people will obviously ignore them so the devs use Touhou characters since there's no big problem and they make sure someone who feels familiar with the characters and the series will take a look at their work. Doujinshis are the same, it's no big surprise that Touhou is the series with the largest amount of works in nhentai.
What does this have to do with Touhou being popular? Simple. Touhou is popular because of the unofficial fan works, if ZUN was more strict with the copyright, this series would be invisible. The series is too mediocre to be alive by itself. Just take a quick look at /jp/, reddit, youtube and other forums and most posts are memes, fanart(20 years and ZUN's art's still worse than MGQ! LMAO!) or some fan work like those NicoNico PVs, some fan-game, an arrange or other shit. There's no discussion about the games or the official works, have you ever wondered why gameplay threads or the Touhou general in /vg/ is always fucking dead?, even more than 50% of fan-games are other genre than bullet hell so I'm starting to wonder if someone unironically likes ZUN's games or bullet hells in general because danmakufu is pretty fucking dead, just with very few exceptions like AJS. Take a look at some other game's community and you'll see a difference. Even games with shit gameplay like Hyperdimension Neptunia has other enjoyable things like characters and it makes fans to like the official games as they are but Touhou has nothing enjoyable, except the music. The characters have no personality, Touhoufags just pick a character and make their personality the first impression they get of the character so if Alice is a tsundere and loves Marisa in the fandom, automatically becomes the canon Alice. This wouldn't be a problem if the characters didn't lack a personality and the conversations in the games weren't just an excuse to have a "story". You /jp/fags wouldn't have too much to post here if there was no fan-art and it makes sense many japanese artists draw shit of the characters, it's the same as the fan-games, Touhou has fans so if someone draws Reimu then the drawing definitely will get attention from one of the many 2hufags and the artist will become famous if keeps making Touhou art, this is why Touhou is also very popular in hentai, everyone gets horny with their waifu and with this many 2hufags, artists have found a gold mine. ZUN's success has also made many musicians very envious of him, that's why there are many miserable ZUN wannabes out there who think ZUN's music is perfect and everyone should learn of him, for example Mikoto Hiroyuki aka Lenk64 or fucking Sylvysprit. The music of these two wannabes isn't too bad but none of them will ever reach ZUN in music quality. At least Mikoto has talent for drawing and could make hentai of their OCs.
It's a weird cycle, ZUN keeps making games, introducing characters and shit and those who create fan content with Touhou can use those new characters, music and all the new bullshit so Touhou remains alive and it keeps ZUN's name relevant and with ZUN being relevant, there's still interest between the 2hufags and ZUN can release his next game, which won't offer anything new but no one will play it anyways, then the japanese devs, hentai artists and musicians can create more content and won't starve and then again 2hufags have stuff to circlejerk about and the series remains alive and this cycle repeats. But it seems this won't last forever and ZUN will have to think of other way to keep his series alive because I can tell Touhou is slowly turning into a dry corpse.
In conclusion, Touhou highly depends on the fan-made works to survive, this is possible thanks to ZUN and his friendly copyright. But I don't see a long lifespan on this niche series so enjoy its last few years, 2hufags.
