>the USN found Eugen's propulsion system, which was the most modern type of German high pressure/high temperature steam plant, to be basically nonfunctional (it broke down more than once during transit across the Atlantic from ETO to US)
>they also didn't really care for the search radar, after messing around with it a little they turned it off and parked an army trailer with a radar array on the deck
>the aircraft catapult was deemed mechanically interesting and removed for disassembly ashore, although it was not AFAIK ever copied or further used for any development; ditto for the torpedoes and torpedo launchers
>the entire galley was stripped out (IIRC with fire axes) and they brought in a galley from some USN frigate or DE for the trip across the atlantic
one of the main battery turrets was taken apart, but again AFAIK not used for anything
>the secondary mounts were all removed and totally disassembled and some of the tech was later used on small and medium sized US gun mounts in the late '40s - including occasionally in land applications
>the passive hydrophones were considered excellent, removed in a single unit, carefully disassembled for study, then reassembled and put onto a submarine for further testing and research, with the set effectively copied for postwar use and totally phasing out existing USN types
