Hifumi was never wrong about the presence of the "queen carrier" having a positive effect on HS victims.
His only error was believing that the entire village would immediately go mad because he assumed that the Hanyuu parasite wasn't a unique phenomenon and assumed that brain parasites were responsible for every religion and ideology, and extrapolated that suicide cults are also caused by the death of the parasite leader, showing that despite his genius, Hifumi could also be fucking retarded and never considered how many people moved out of the village and never had major issues during their entire lives, despite no longer being in contact with the queen carrier.

Given just how much they researched Rika, I think it's safe to assume that Irie is correct in that proximity to Rika has a calming effect on those affected by the pathogen, though it doesn't seem they quite understand the exact mechanics of how Rika triggers it.
What's wrong is the theory that when Rika dies, the villagers are sent into a frothing rage within 48 hours. At most, they'd be more susceptible to the pathogen since they won't generate antibodies any more, but Hanyuu, as the apparent true source of the pathogen, always disappearing alongside Rika may also prevent the syndrome from growing completely out of control.
