Just google it, you will find download links for all the games and english patches except for the newest, touhou 13.
Touhou ist the only danmaku I've ever played, so I can't tell you anything about why it's special. But I think most people like it because it's a fun game and it has little girls as main characters, which are connected through funny stories. So I think it's a lot of moe-factor in there, that's why it's so popular with otakus.
