Are you sure that's what she was doing? This was the background at the time. I thought it would have been the 'bottom layer' background (where you could see the pit below) if that were the case.
As for the "object she held in her hand" that "poured a light like the rays of dawn", should I have taken that as being a key to the vault? That would probably make more sense than being the Mario-suicide device, which was the only gold-glowing thing that came to my mind. I couldn't fathom why she would be holding that.
