If spirits are too strong for you, you can try mixing them with juices or soft drinks. My recommendation would be vodka and orange juice since you can't even taste the vodka. I've only ever tired tequila with coke and it tastes similar to coke with bourbon or scotch. But definitely try them straight first.

Beer is better for taking it easy, drinking slowly over the day. For beer brands, pretty much any famous, bland lagers should be fine for your first like Beck's, Asahi etc. Make you drink from a glass and not a can or bottle.
