The previous gen is, and the newer gen got a little boost in horsepower/torque, but it's not available yet, so the verdict is still out. It's certainly underpowered in generally, but cars with a lot of horsepower don't really get to benefit from it much in real life because you're probably breaking the law and bound to get a speeding ticket if you do. A lot of people love Miatas even though they have less horsepower, but you can pretty much bang through gears and have fun without breaking the law in them. I'm in the market for a car later this year, and I'm most likely going to either get a Miata unless the BRZ/86 ends up being really good.
