I haven't really seen anything to suggest that they require fear any more than humans require ice cream. They might enjoy it, but don't require it.

That and it seems like the older youkai are the less they depend on humans in that manner.

Finally, as the other anon points out, it varies from species to species. Some people like to assume that all youkai require fear and all youkai eat humans which makes no sense considering how wildly they vary.
