I ran a pretty thin mining deck parallel to my core deck up until at least 2k words, then I just started to add in pretty much every kanji I didn't recognize into the mining deck and it quickly became large enough that I didn't want to juggle two vocab decks at once, so I put the core one on review-only.
A mining deck is a bit more free-form in that if you don't add in new cards every day then you'll eventually run out of new cards and it will be easier to handle for a time until you start adding more cards, in this way you can pace yourself a bit better.

As for when you should transition over to a mining deck it depends on person to person but most people will say 2k words is a good starting point, because by then you will want to start reading more and more, preferably even play a game and start mining from there, even if the start is going to be rough you'll mine a crapton of words from games.
You can run a mining deck in parallel as long as you pace yourself and don't overdo it. A deck with a mere 100 words in it is very easy to review alongside a larger deck.

A tip I can throw out that I should have followed myself from the start is that if you come across expressions(There are a shit-ton) like かもしれない or について then always add the entire sentence that contains the expression and work to understand it based on the sentence.
Individual words is simpler to just grind out but expressions kinda become meaningless if you can't understand how it works in the sentence. I made the mistake of adding a bunch of expressions in isolation and they aren't of much help to me right now, I'm going to have to reform them someday.

I was more or less agreeing with you and was just being cheeky. Gambling in gacha is really no different than gambling in a casino when it comes to being "wasteful".
Of course, a Casino has a much different feel to it than gacha which is undeniable.
I liked that they messed with her by saying the minimum bet overseas is 10000yen and that if she is going to go to a Casino she should at least bring 40000yen or something. Which isn't really bad advice but she is clearly very stringent with her money so the very thought of that spooked her.
