Space wants to be space. There's no more maliciousness to it than there is to Earth. Actually, I suppose there's less, seeing as how space doesn't have people to stab you or camels to spit at you.
The romanticism comes from the exoticness of it all. The uncountable possibilities waiting to be found and discovered.
