I'm afraid to say this, but after having been on it since its release I think that ZUN did a sub-par job with the latest installment of his shmup series. The further I'm making my way through the game on different difficulties, the more I realize he has ultimately lost his edge in terms of pattern creativity.
Regardless of its inherent easiness on the lowest settings, I hold that nothing can bring back the visual and presence-of-mind-inducing awesomeness that Imperishable Night was.
