There was an edition of Hedoban magazine where they were complaining about this, Babymetal gets no coverage on Metal focused media in Japan, I think they're angry because an idol group is representing japanese metal overseas.
About mainstream media...I don't know man, their songs are too long for TV and pop radio stations and people don't care about guitar solos. Metal is something that doesn't mesh well with the general public, I recall some people reviewing the Babymetal openings for Gaga and they said they don't like to be yelled at and their music was too loud.

It's gonna to be hard for Babymetal to become bigger than this.
