First let me thank you again for posting this youtube link. The content of the video was very helpful, and also the Tofugu Bro is quite cute and friendly.

Alright, about your post. No one can deny that working with a tutor or teacher is both effective and almost always necessary for gaining fluency in Japanese. HOWEVER, I still feel that self-study is a viable alternative. You can self-study Japanese! While you won't obtain conversational fluency, you will certainly learn a huge chunk of the grammar and reading/writing system on your own. Also, because of Japanese phonetics and the amount of audio supplements out there, your pronunciation -with a little work- will be more than adequate (just play close attention to intonation contours when you're listening to moonspeak).

Pick your texts and resouces, make a study plan, and just do it!

I truly believe that if you really work hard through self-study, by the time you arrive in Japan (be it through Jet or some other job) you have such a strong language already built in your mind, that the transition to fluency will be one of excitement and inspiration --not frustration and drudgery....

tl;dr Use what's out there to learn Japanese while in America, and then move to Japan for advanced study. You don't need college classes to learn Japanese!
