YMMV and I don't think this advice pertains much to 'MERIKA but here you go.

With their excessively high power-levels, "fujoshi" don't really get much love. On the other hand, being a "soft otaku", a girl who gets the references but doesn't go overboard, is becoming more and more popular. And so, recently, the number of cute girls who identify themselves as "otaku" has been increasing. These days, there certainly seem to be a lot of people thinking, "I want female otaku friends! I want an otaku girlfriend!"
