The characters might be trying to protect japanese culture but they don't think that japan is the best, they just protect it because it's an alternate universe where Japan lost the war even harder and is about to actually stop existing as a country, and there is really nothing wrong with characters doing that
Hell, you can tell Ryukishi tried his best to make most chinese characters be well written, and it sure worked since most of them are the best characters in the entire VN

Spain is nowhere near big into anime and videogames in general, most people only used to play FIFA and League of Legends before Fortnite got popular, and the biggest nerd I met loved Hearthstone, Diablo 3 and Skyrim
Only popular anime here would be Dragon Ball but only because it was the one that was broadcasted on TV while most of the current "weebs" were children, and even then it wasn't that popular
I only met one person IRL who might fit the actual weeb status but his powerlevel never went beyond Persona 5 and Mob Psycho as his most obscure games/anime, and I knew most of his friend circle who were less into weeb stuff than him
For some reason Umineko is very popular among spanish weebs though, that much is true for some reason
