I think it's just a natural progression for many people here. The anime-related hobby boards are bursting with effeminate sub males, who have probably always been terrible with women, so perhaps there's a little desperation involved, and a realization that maybe it's just not meant to be. The japanese media itself, with its constant glorifying and beautifying of females, probably does a number on them as well - seeing all these happy feminine girls start to fill them with both empathy and envy, thus eventually leading to emulation.

And then naturally they might start finding some big protective guy a perfect match for their feminine nature. Perhaps they're still interested in girls, but their tastes eventually filter into solely boyish girls, dom girls, girls who will peg them, then maybe futas...and then finally just guys.

Of course this doesn't have to necessarily extend into real life, and could just stay in the realm of trap threads, tg doujins, anime husbandos, and otome games. But for some, I'd imagine it's only a matter of time. They're probably living a life of denial right as they're reading this.
