Clannad's the best because it's long as hell. By the time the tragedy strikes in each route you feel like you know the characters personally.

I didn't really care much for Nagisa, but when she kicked the bucket I felt like I lost someone close to me, as pathetic as that may sound. It's not just that it's long, it's that it's packed like content rather than filler like 99% of other long games which makes it entertaining as hell. Sunohara was a god tier sidekick to top it off.

It also has so many routes that at least one is bound to relate to you. Tomoya's dad is what really packed a wallop for me. It was depressing just to look at the poor guy. And don't even get me started on Ushio.

Clannad would've been shit if Nagisa didn't die. The story of Nagisa dying and Tomoya coping with it is the whole point of the After Story and what made it a god tier VN.

The good end was simply created to make people not want to kill themselves. Key had to end it with a positive message rather than "life sucks, deal with it".
