1. Get an ISO of Hiren's BootCD from the official Website (the old version, v15.2) and burn it to a CD-R. There are more modern Linux-based tools that do the same thing, but it's easier and Hiren's has a nice retro feel to it now.
2. Acquire a hard drive of sufficient capacity for backups and connect it to your old PC. A USB hard drive may work, but test compatibility with a USB flash drive before you buy one.
3. Put the CD in the old PC and boot from it.
4. Run one of the disk cloning programs on the CD like DriveImage XML or Seagate DiskWizard.
5. Create a backup image of the old hard drive in a folder on your backup drive.
6. When your old hard drive dies (or, preferably, slightly before that), buy a replacement and restore data to it from the backup image.
