also another thing that grinds my gears that i even see from AAA developers (though usually handled by third parties) is when they can't see that mixing high resolution UI and character art is extremely jarring and looks awful. it just sucks because the actual game could look really amazing until you open a menu or dialogue box and it completely breaks the design language. it's inexcusable because it's such an easy thing to fix--the modern ports of final fantasy and dragon quest in particular are extremely guilty of this
