Why are people so shocked and appaled at this? Did /jp/ forget it's Japan we're talking about here, or did we get a couple of new users?

tl;dr Want to practice reading, only have access to charts and queue cards. Preferably something interesting while still being somewhat simple.

Picked up hiragana, and can read some katakana. Can't read fluently yet. Since I can't really read much, there is very little that I can read for practice that isn't full of kanji and characters that I'm yet to learn. I've only really been reading simple words off of charts up until now (which only really ranges from words with three or maybe four symbols, such as strawberry or glasses). I'd like to read something to help me practice, but I don't really know where to start. Anything simple to read for someone just learning? Google gave me more charts, and I'd like to find something interesting if at all possible (as opposed to picture books with two words per page). Much appreciated.
