The false shrine is just another kick in the teeth for Marisa. Had she not been a coward back then…

Anon, poor sweet Anon, greets Marisa warmly, “Good evening, dear-Ah, Marisa. It’s been a little while, how are you?”

Marisa fumbles over the carefully constructed speeches she made on why she was a vile woman that Anon should hate. All that comes out is a choked noise as Marisa eyes grow wide.

Anon’s pleasant expression immediately turns to one of serious concern. A concern Marisa does not deserve. Still, as he has yet to learn the truth he frets over her wretchedness, “Marisa, what happened? You look…”

Awful? That’d be a fitting word to describe Marisa. It’d be so easy to spin a lie and win his sympathy. If she cried about how hard she’s been working, she’d be able to milk his pity for all it’s worth. But no matter how low she’s sunken, she’s not that far gone. Steeling herself Marisa replies, “I… I’m sorry I’ve taken advantage of you.”

The words are hard to get out. There’s no backing out of this, which is why she must press on. Still, seeing Anon’s face shift to confusion without losing that soft concern is a bitter gall. So much misplaced trust… Before Anon gets a chance to speak Marisa continues, “When I… took advantage of you about a month back I… I laced your tea with a fertility drug. I believe I’m pregnant as a result.”

Anon is silent. His mind surely racing with thoughts of shock and betrayal. Marisa should have given him time to process but the catharsis of admitting the truth much like the relief felt after retching up the last bits of a misbrewed potion drives her forward, “I can make things right. If I were to become a youkai it’d cause a… it wouldn’t be a problem anymore. I understand things could never be the same but-”

Finally torn from his stupor Anon shouts, “No!” Before lunging forward and grabbing Marisa by the shoulders, “Please don’t do that. I-I understand that you’re upset but please don’t. We can move forward from here. I’m not happy that you lied, but I don’t hate you or our child!”

What? How could he not? It-it’s a rape baby! As Anon holds her tiny frame Marisa tearfully protests, “How could you not? I betrayed you after everything! I took advantage of you at your darkest hour. I’m a monster! I’m worse than a monster. I looked Hana in the eyes and dared to play mentor even after I raped her father!”

Anon seems to cool quickly, a talent that must have developed from years with Reimu and the stresses of this hell. Much to Marisa’s shame, his first action after regaining composure is to console her. Her! The woman whom he should be all rights despise and drive away. Still, he pats on the back before saying, “It’s okay. I don’t hate you. You’ve done so much for me and Hana. We should be thinking about our future and our child’s future.”

Despite his soothing words, Marisa keeps crying into his chest for a while.

Marisa has had a difficult relationship with her family, and I can relate. It is very difficult to go through life knowing that your one and only family has decided to reject you and to know that your parents regret having had you. How are you supposed to think that you are worth any more than mud, when you have been treated that way?

A youkai!
