Oh, and before I forget: Virgilia to Dante's original Virgil, also mentioned in that passage as passing off Dante to Beatrice. In addition, Beatrice is the name of the woman the the real life Dante loved but could not have, thus making an idealized and perfect version of her to lead him into glory and salvation.

In this manner, and by following this logic, the basic theme of the Battler/Beatrice Character Arc is essentially a retelling of Dante's Divine Comedy.

Dante finally comes face-to-face with God (the Golden Truth), but cannot handle the all-mighty Wonder that He exuded (which is where the story diverts, as Battler could handle wielding the Golden Truth IE becoming akin to God). Realizing his humanity, and the fact that his 'Beatrice' is merely an illusion however grand and perfect, Dante returns to the mortal world an enlightened and changed man (much like how Battler returns changed, but for the worse).
