Okay, I figured with my schedule the most optimal solution is to ""learn"" new words (and the kanji they are usually written with) using primarily Core, until I get to about the size of N3 vocab.

How do I make the most of it though?

What I currently do:
> look at the screen for a fraction of a second, enough to recognize it (if I actually remember it well, otherwise I fail it)
> write down the kanji from memory
> while listening to the example sentence
> read the Japanese sentence and check if I heard it right
> ignore the translation, unless I can't understand anything, which doesn't happen often
