I've come to stop hating the Higurashi anime for some reason. It's a clumsy adaptation and absolutely doesn't count as having read the VN, but it's still a very effective.and charming story.

If anything, my dislike for the anime comes from the fact that people judge Higurashi, rate it or compare it to Umineko having only watched the anime, which is doesn't do the VN justice at all. It turns a fantastic story into a merely "good" story.

Even so, I really like the anime. It may be nostalgia, but I think it's generally well made and has its own charm. It's just nowhere near as good as the VN and spoils the entire thing with a fraction of the emotional investment, so watching it without having touched the VN is a terrible decision.

Actually, now that I'm rewatching it after reading the VN, I like it more than ever. Probably because my knowledge of the characters, the complexity of the story and all the information exclusive to the VN is still in my head, so my brain can fill up all the holes in the anime and allow me to undertand what the fuck is going on in Matsuribayashi, give a fuck about Irie, or see why Mion is the best character. Even if the anime itself leaves all of that out.
