There's a lot of different out of combat special skills you can put points into, from self explanatory shit like cooking and smithing, over being able to summon birds you can send shopping for you, all the way to bullshit like fortune telling which can give you some meta commentary here and there under special circumstances.
Those in-depth item creation and skill systems are something you don't really see in normal JRPGs, they are cool.

It's honestly just a really good game. Very gripping 80s/90s era fantasy/scifi anime inspired story with tons of twists and turns, cool world and characters.
Even should the remake be bad for whatever reason it's absolutely worth going back and playing the OG.
