It's implied that Higanbana is an universe created by MARIA after she became a Witch of Origins and a Creator level being. Marie has a similar name to Maria, they are both abused by authority figures and have a shitty home life, the school is full of bullying, there is an abandoned Sakutaro doll in the backyard of the playground, there is magic and creepy creatures everywhere, bunnies being broken (like the Chiesters except literally broken and killed) and there are a lot of story elements that Maria herself came up with in EP4 (like a supernatural being making someone into a humiliatee scapegoat to save the other kids from being bullied, or the bus falling from a cliff killing all the bullies in a gruesome way).

This was all in Maria's diary, so maybe Ange wrote Higanbana based on that? The most important character is a poor bullied loli named Yukari (Ange's new name in EP8) who reminds me A LOT of high school Ange. They said Ange had written many works before the Sakutaro series that never got recognition at the time, which could retroactively refer to Higanbana, considering it isn't that popular IRL. Higanbana itself breaks the fourth wall in a similar way, having the kids only praise the voice actors in the Seacats anime, implying the adaptation was shit otherwise.

Then again, that's only from a meta-fantasy perspective where MARIA is a true witch. The real Maria never got to become an author/creator, only a "God" in the Takano sense because Ange immortalized her daydreams and imaginary friends in her Sakutaro book series.
