Umineko was massively shit on when Episode 8 came out. If you read any of the Japanese reviews at the time you'll see a bunch of people just shitting on it. Nowadays, however, you'll see that the reviews are more mixed, and you'll notice that the people that rate Umineko episode 8 highly mention the fact that their rating has more to do with the manga version than the VN.

I think overall that the episode 8 manga is the better version, but I do think that there are some aspects that the VN does better, and sometimes the manga goes too far in how much it reveals. I think the way the VN does the magic ending is much more poignant than how it's done in the manga for this reason.
