Even if there are certainly some stretches of bad content, actually having some amount of connection to some characters you get can make the story more enjoyable.
That's fair. I'm the opposite. I started out actually playing it, but discovered I don't like the gacha system of having almost no control over what characters I get or even have the chance of getting along with just generally finding the actual gameplay & story uninteresting. I actually did pull an Abby though. That was fun for about 5 minutes.
