I generally agree, but honestly, that's the most fun part of translation for me - sounding decent in English, while approximating the Japanese meaning as best as possible. Of course you lose nuances, that's a given, but I feel like a good translator can find a nice balance to not sound completely "disconnected", as you worded it.
