i live in japan, most of the guys i know with japanese girlfriends barely speak the language. N4 on average, N3 at the absolute highest top-end. getting a japanese girlfriend as a foreigner in japan is 90% timing and luck, 5% personality. little else (not even looks, aside from being caucasian) seems to be important
