It's my headcanon that the ancient spirit Yuuka originates from the thick forest-rich lands belonging to modern Russia, from the age before anyone was even aware of the Rus people. Once discovered by humans, she lived beside but away from them for a while before gaining infamy and contributing to pagan legends of evil natural spirits such as rusalkas (inland water body mermaids) and leshii. Over time, she traveled across the world after earning fear and persecution in one place after another in various ways, reaching France through the ever-turbulent Balkans around the Renaissance period and staying there for a few years, mastering French within months, before coming to America during the Wild West age, where she found herself comfortable for a long time, but eventually she returned to Tzarist Russia through Japan and then China. This fateful decision led her into the Red Guard in search of freedom from the oppressive monarchy and, after the Russian Civil War, the CheKa-reorganized-as-NKVD, which also allowed her to indulge in her sadistic inclinations as a side benefit. In NKVD's ranks she fought from the Battle of Moscow to Berlin and then against the Japanese in Manchuria and on Sakhalin, later allegedly using her experience to covertly help the Maoists prevail in China; however, the second half of the century with its developments in human education presented her with a choice through Yukari Yakumo: either stay in the human world and wither together with the miniscule number of remaining spirits with physical manifestations or come to her forcefully cordoned-off piece of reality and blossom with the still-present belief in fantasy in exchange for helping maintaing that belief as an extraordinarily terrifying youkai.
