And how could introducing a new religion to Japan gain one political power? There was some degree of anti-Buddhist violence when Buddhism was introduced to China. I can't really recall if the same thing happened in Japan but the imperial court couldn't have been too thrilled about it, a new religion would have undermined the authority of the Emperor, until Buddhism and Shintoism basically became the same thing.
