it seems like ultimately the underlying factor is time. because if you see a word 20 times across different contexts over a year without a dictionary, you'll probably learn it. but most of us don't want to wait 20 exposures for every word.
i read this study that tested the ability to recall new words from reading (white) vs reading + dictionary (grey) vs reading + dictionary + "learning activity", perhaps comparable to anki (black).
its clear that active effort into learning a particular word results in vastly higher retention. the white bar might be as tall as the black bar given 6-10x the amount of exposure and time.
