Do you like ZUN? I've been a big Touhou fan ever since the release of his 1998 game, Lotus Land Story. Before that, I really didn't understand any of his work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on LLS where, uh, Marisa's presence became more apparent. I think Perfect Cherry Blossom was the man's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on rebirth. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three games. Reimu, take off your uniform. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Lunasa, Merlin and Lyrica. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sanae, remove your dress. In terms of danmaku craftsmanship, the sheer game design, this game hits a new peak of professionalism. Sanae, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the gameplay of "She was also living on the border of Gensokyo". In this stage, ZUN addresses the problems of abusive Youkai authority. "Resurrection Butterfly" is the most moving spellcard of the 2000s, about life and death. The card is extremely bittersweet. The danmaku are as thrilling and beautiful as, uh, anything I've seen in Cave. Reimu, lift up your arm so Sanae can see your armpit. ZUN's Windows era seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially stages like "Frightening Eyes No One Loves" and, uh, "Unfortunate Captain of the Holy Palanquin". Sanae, don't just stare at it, lick it. But I also think ZUN works best within the confines of the PC-98, than as a Windows artist, and I stress the word artist. This is "The Trump Card is Always a Bad Move", a great, great stage, a personal favorite.
