Pick something unusual. Like a spider, or a velvet worm. Or maybe a deep sea carnivorous slug. Or whatever, anything but a wolf or a cat.

Seriously, why does it seem all furries are either wolves or cats? There are plenty of other animals.

Actually there's plenty of variation on the theme already. For example you got Kuzunoha, who - while she was certainly a great sorceress - is mostly remembered as being a loving, devoted wife and a good mother.
On the other hand you got characters like Tamamo no Mae (probably among the more famous ones), who was a seductress and excellent shapeshifter, but not really that amazingly powerful when it came down to it. Although she has moved into public perception as a nine-tailed fox since, which isn't entirely unlikely since it was about 800 years ago that she was last out making the world slightly less safe.
The story however doesn't tell how she came back from the dead.
