I don't think that's entirely true. While she established very early on as having a bit of a fibbing streak, I think this only serves to contrast her very straight forward and honest personality. Yes, she does keep things hidden for the sake of maintaining an image, but in regards to certain things, she's often more than eager to speak up. I think the juxtaposition between her lies and secrets, and her blunt and honest personality, is one of the things that makes her such a fascinating and deep character. I think these personality traits, as well, play into some of Touhou's overarching themes of duality and boundaries, but that's another subject entirely.
Anyway, I agree with you that Marisa is incredibly human, which is yet another charming point in her favor and one of the things that makes her so likable. Though, I do think that Sanae might be a bit more of a reader surrogate character at times, if only because she has the advantage of actually being from the outside and still having the mentality of an outsider on certain issues. I think the surrogate ball kind of bounces between Marisa's and Sanae's sides of the court, depending on what ZUN wants to do that day.

That didn't stop me from getting the CoLA fumo.
Though, I would really like to find a way to change her eye color at some point. Probably a bit easier to do with a figure than a fumo, I'd imagine.
