And Fate was where Shirou made his biggest display of maturity over desire. He didn't try to keep Saber. He didn't try to exploit a tainted grail, he didn't try to force her to stay with any sort of magic, and he didn't even open his mouth to openly voice his desire to keep her despite knowing he couldn't, an act that could have seriously jeopardized both his and her ability to concentrate on the battle they were about to fight.

That kind of thing takes huge amounts of willpower and it dwarfs every other act Shirou performed in the entire F/SN VN. Killing Dark Saber was nothing compared to simply saying goodbye to a fully sane Saber and watching her vanish to a time you know she'll never return from.

Now I know that contradicting this whole notion of honor and duty was the whole basis of the depth of Heaven's Feel. It's really not that I don't get it. I do. I just wasn't convinced by Nasu's arguments in HF.

Berserker can easily outrun Shirou. A three legged dog could outrun Shirou.

But Rider is not Shirou. She has no problems running circles around all the other servants, least of all Berserker.

Berserker had difficulty engaging Saber in a graveyard. He has no hope of catching Rider in a forest.
