They are almost always secluded wizards who have turned themselves undead as a way to reach immortality to be able to continue their experiments and/or gain more power.
Rarely do you see wizards being productive, upstanding members of a normal society, and lichdom only makes their seclusion worse.

There's also the little problem that being alone for hundreds of years with only animal corpses and human skeletons for company tends to have a toll on your already fragile sanity.Probably what makes them go and attack mortal settlements with armies of undead, con counting the common power-trip of being a metal-as-fuck all-powerful skeleton wizard.
