Something I've always wondered about the Yen. Why does £1 = ¥170, $1 = ¥102, etc? Why is the Yen number so high? Was there a point where Japanese citizens had ¥1 coins or notes before the number shot up?

In this pic for example, there are ¥1000 and ¥5000 notes. Meanwhile, here in the UK, the highest number paper note in circulation is the £50 note. What made the Yen shoot up?
